Firstly, who am I and what were my reasons for wanting to work for Oceans? My name is Rebecca Evans and I'm currently a final year student at Sheffield Hallam University studying PR and Media. For my final project, I was given the choice to do basically anything really as long as it related to my degree, obviously.
My first reaction when given the choice was that I wanted to do something that was practical rather than sitting in the library trying to string words out to complete a dissertation. I used social media as my platform to share information and find someone to work with so I sent a tweet out saying "If anyone knows of any small clothing brands or you are starting up your own clothing company then please contact me directly". I had a couple of people reach out to me that just wanted to sell the generic 'Instagramable' style of clothing, which is fair enough as it is extremely popular right now but as soon as Will reached out to me and explained the reasons behind the company, I was sold.
Will and I got talking about how the company works and the main reason behind it which is all explained in the first blog post, the idea of Will wanting to have an impact and trying to make a change to the world at such a young age was honestly inspirational and was what drove me to want to work with Oceans.
As said in the previous blog, Oceans work with the organisation Plastic Oceans so that 10% of anything sold from Oceans then goes towards to Plastic Oceans to help clear up the disturbance humans have caused to the oceans. Plastic Oceans created a documentary called 'A Plastic Ocean' (linked below) that started off with a team of marine biologists being on the search for whales to then later on realise there was a deeper issue that had never really been addressed, the plastic waste that had just been dropped into the middle of the ocean. It is an extremely eye-opening documentary that then makes you think of how you can improve on decreasing the amount of plastic used on a daily basis which will also be covered in my next blog post 'Pointless Plastic.'
